O.L. Vrouwekerk, Bruges
Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482) was the daughter of Charles the Bold (1433-1477) by Isabella of Bourbon. At 19 years of age she married the irascible Maximilian of Austria. Her accidental death at the age of 25 took place while out hunting with a falcon. The Gothic mausoleum, finished in 1502, was erected by her husband. It was executed by Jan Borman, Renier van Thienen, Jan Hervey and Pieter de Beckere. Beckere from Brussels was one the makers of tombs who gave artistic value to the casting of metal, which became an industry in Dinant, Tournai and Mechelen.
