Peasants have gathered for a boisterous celebration outside a country inn. They are enjoying themselves, drinking and dancing to the sound of the bagpipes. On the other side of the wooden fence, homeward-bound revellers are already struggling with the consequences of too much drink, having to be held up or helped back onto their feet by their women companions.
