Study of a Female Nude
-
Black and white chalk, 238 x 199 mm
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Adriaen van de Velde often based his painted figures on drawings he had made earlier. He produced preparatory sketches of some of his figures' poses, working from both nude and clothed models. However, most of the figures in the drawings bear little resemblance to those in the painting. The only exception is this study of a nude female figure in a pose very similar to that of the Virgin in the Annunciation in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
