In the Germanic lands during the eighteenth century, and in Flanders by the seventeenth, the pulpit had become an iconographic vehicle for expressing the truth of the Faith in figures whose style was borrowed from the eloquence of the preacher. Indeed, the pulpit was called the 'chaire de vrit'. In France the sermon was cultivated as a literary genre.
